Muntin
A muntin is a slim bar that divides one pane of glass, or one sash, into smaller panes called lites.
Muntins give a window its grid look. In classic steel-style windows, true divided lites use thin bars with a pane of glass in each opening. Other styles lay bars on the glass or place them between the panes for a similar look.
People often mix up muntins and mullions. A muntin sits inside one sash. A mullion joins separate units. Narrow muntins are a hallmark of steel, and the material shapes how slim they can be. See our steel windows and doors and slim-profile windows guide. Ask whether bars are true divided, applied or between the glass, because each looks and cleans differently.
