ENERGY STAR climate zone
An ENERGY STAR climate zone is a region of the country with its own limits for the U-factor and SHGC a window must meet to qualify.
ENERGY STAR splits the country into climate zones. Each zone has its own targets, because a window that suits Minnesota winters is not the best choice for a Texas summer. Hot regions tend to stress a low SHGC. Cold regions stress a low U-factor.
To check a product, find the zone for your county and compare it with the U-factor and SHGC on the NFRC label. Do not assume one rating works everywhere. Our page on energy-efficient windows in Texas explains how to choose for North Texas, and the guide to SHGC and U-factor for Texas goes deeper.
