SHGC (Solar Heat Gain Coefficient)
SHGC is a number from 0 to 1 that shows how much of the sun's heat passes through a window. A lower number blocks more heat.
SHGC stands for solar heat gain coefficient. It measures the share of solar heat that gets through the glass and into your room. Zero means no heat gets through. One means all of it does. Low-E coatings and tints are the main ways makers change it.
In North Texas, summer sun drives cooling bills, so a low SHGC matters most on south and west walls. A low number can also darken the glass if the maker is careless, so check visible transmittance next to it. Both numbers sit on the NFRC label. See how we pair them in our energy-efficient windows for Texas guide. Ask for the rated figure for the exact glass you will receive.
