Low-E coating

A low-E coating is a thin, nearly invisible metal layer on glass that reflects heat while letting daylight through.

Low-E means low emissivity. The coating sits on one surface inside an insulated glass unit. It bounces heat back toward its source. In summer it keeps solar heat out. In winter it helps keep warmth in. The glass still looks clear.

Makers offer different coatings for different climates. In Texas you usually want one tuned to cut solar heat, which shows up as a lower SHGC. The coating works best inside a sealed IGU. Our glass options guide compares the choices. Ask your dealer which coating suits each wall of your house.
