Awning window
An awning window is hinged at the top and opens outward from the bottom, like a shade over the glass.
The sash swings out from the sill edge and the top stays fixed. The open sash acts as a small canopy. You can leave it open for fresh air during light rain.
Awning windows are usually wider than tall. They work well high on a wall for privacy, or stacked below a fixed window to add ventilation under a large view. They share hardware ideas with the casement window. See our casement and awning windows page. Ask whether the sash opens wide enough for cleaning from inside. Ask about screen options.
