Certificate of Appropriateness

A Certificate of Appropriateness is City of Dallas approval for exterior work on a landmark or in a landmark district, issued before the work starts.

If your home sits in a Dallas landmark district, exterior changes need approval first. The city calls that approval a Certificate of Appropriateness, or CA. Small changes can go through staff review. Larger ones go to the Landmark Commission.

Window and door changes are often part of that review, so check before you order. Many historic districts also have their own rules for style, materials and finish. Our guide to windows in Dallas historic districts explains the steps, and our post on M Streets window rules covers one local example. We can help with product choices for your Dallas project.
