Jamb

The jambs are the vertical side parts of a door or window frame. The head jamb runs across the top.

Jambs line the sides of the opening and hold hinges, strike plates and weatherstripping. Together with the sill and head, they make the frame that the sash or door panel sits in.

Jamb depth must match the wall thickness. If a frame is too shallow, trim and finishing get awkward. Always confirm jamb depth with the maker before you order. Many projects also depend on the rough opening being the right size for the frame. We cover that in our planning guide. Ask for a drawing that shows jamb depth and any extension needed.
