Warm edge spacer

A warm edge spacer is the low-conductivity strip at the perimeter of an insulated glass unit that cuts heat loss and lowers the chance of condensation.

Every insulated glass unit needs a spacer to hold the panes apart. Older spacers were aluminum, which moves heat quickly and leaves the glass edge cold. Warm edge spacers use foam, plastic, composite or other materials that carry far less heat.

A warmer glass edge means less condensation along the bottom of the pane and better overall performance for the IGU. The effect shows up in the unit's U-factor. When you compare quotes, ask which spacer is standard. It is a small detail that pairs well with argon gas fill and a low-E coating.
