What is the difference between rough opening and frame size?
The rough opening is the hole framed in the wall. The frame size is the outside size of the window or door unit that goes in it. The opening is larger, so the crew can set the unit level, plumb and square and leave a gap for shims and sealant. Our glossary has short entries for rough opening, jamb and sill.
Mixing the two up is a common ordering mistake. If you order a window at the size of the hole, it will not go in. If you order a much smaller unit, the gap grows. This post uses published instructions to show how the numbers work, and it is general information, not a rule for your job.
How much bigger should the opening be?
It depends on the product and the maker. We read three Sun Windows documents. They show how different two products can be. Sun is one of the manufacturers Honey Rock works with. The numbers below are Sun’s, for Sun products. Do not copy them to another brand.
| Product (Sun document) | What the maker publishes |
|---|---|
| Clad vinyl casement size chart | Rough opening width and height should typically be 1/2” greater than the unit/frame dimension |
| Swing door installation instructions | The rough opening should provide approximately 1/4” clearance between the sides and top of the product and the framing |
| Sliding door installation instructions | Allow a minimum of 1/4” clearance on the sides and 1/2” at the head |
| Mulled casement units | Generally, add the unit dimensions together and add 1/2” for the rough opening |
Notice that a window and a door from the same maker use different clearances. A pair of units joined together, called a mull, uses a different sum. That is why one rule of thumb does not work for a whole house.
Why does the gap exist?
The gap lets the installer adjust the unit and seal it. Walls are never perfect. Framing can lean. Sills can slope. A gap lets the crew shim the unit into true position, then seal and flash the opening. Flashing is the material that directs water out and away from the opening.
Sun’s size chart also notes a tolerance: unit sizes have a tolerance of plus or minus .0625”. In plain words, a factory size can vary by a small amount, and the gap absorbs it. Other makers publish their own tolerances, so ask for them.
What must the opening be like before the unit goes in?
It must be level, plumb and square. Sun’s sliding door instructions say the sides must be plumb, the head must be level and corners must be square for rectangular products. They also say, in capitals, that the floor surface at the sill absolutely must be level.
Sun’s swing door instructions give the same checks: verify the rough opening sill is level, verify the sides are square and plumb, and test fit the unit. They add: “Correct any problems with the rough opening before proceeding.”
A short checklist for your site:
- Is the sill level?
- Are the sides plumb?
- Is the head level?
- Is the opening square? Measure both diagonals; they should match.
- Is the exterior surface smooth where the unit will seat?
- Can the opening take a test fit?
Fix problems first. A gap or twist that is built in will show up later as a door that rubs or a window that leaks.

How do luxury products handle this?
Custom steel and slim aluminum units come with shop drawings, and those drawings set the opening. Jada, for example, says the sill details for a pivot door are worked out in the shop drawing process, and says its pivot doors come with a welded attachment flange to join the door frame to the framing. Bertrand’s FAQ says its offer includes window profiles with nailing fins, which allows installing European windows according to American standards.
So the order of work matters. Get the shop drawing, check the opening against it, then frame or adjust. Do not frame to a guess. See our post on how a pivot door works for the floor and sill side of the problem.

What should you do when a rule limits the size?
Check the local rules before you change an opening. In the M Streets Conservation District in Dallas, for example, the ordinance says windows on the front facade and wrap-around must fit the wall opening, and that infill surrounding the window is not allowed. A bigger or smaller unit may need approval. See our post on M Streets window rules.
Permits matter too. Some cities want drawings or photos of the work. Southlake, for instance, asks for photos of each elevation with replaced windows, as we explain in our post on Southlake permits.
What should you ask before you order?
Ask for the drawing, the clearances and the tolerance. Our short list:
- What is the unit size, and what rough opening do you require?
- What clearance do you want at the sides, head and sill?
- What tolerance applies to the unit size?
- Will you give me a shop drawing to approve?
- Who measures, and who is responsible if the opening is wrong?
- How is the unit attached: nailing fin, flange or another method?
Honey Rock describes its work as running “From the initial design process to the final installation.” Measuring and ordering sit inside that. Bring plans, photos and any survey you have. For the larger plan, read our guide to planning a window and door project.

Questions people ask
What is the difference between rough opening and frame size?
The rough opening is the framed hole in the wall. The frame size is the outside size of the unit that goes in it. The opening is larger so the crew can set the unit level, plumb and square, with a gap around it.
How much bigger is the rough opening than the window?
It depends on the product. Sun Windows' casement size chart says rough opening width and height should typically be 1/2" greater than the unit/frame dimension. Its swing door instructions say approximately 1/4" of clearance on the sides and top. Use your own maker's drawing.
Who should measure the opening?
Have the installer or window company measure, and have them confirm sizes on a shop drawing before the order. Measure the framed opening, check that it is square, and note the floor level. Do not order from a guess.
What if the opening is out of square?
Fix it before the unit goes in. Sun's installation instructions say to correct any problems with the rough opening before proceeding, and that sides which are not square and plumb can prevent the product from being installed correctly.
