# Laminated glass

Laminated glass bonds two panes around a plastic interlayer, so the glass cracks but stays in one piece instead of falling out.

A laminated pane is a sandwich. Two sheets of glass sit on either side of a clear interlayer, often PVB. If the glass breaks, the interlayer holds the pieces in place. That helps with security, safety and sound control, and it blocks much of the sun's UV light.

Homeowners in storm-prone areas use laminated glazing as the base for [impact-resistant glass](https://honeyrock.multisites.ai/glossary/impact-resistant-glass). It differs from [tempered glass](https://honeyrock.multisites.ai/glossary/tempered-glass), which crumbles into small pieces rather than holding together.
