# Jamb

The jambs are the vertical side parts of a door or window frame. The head jamb runs across the top.

Jambs line the sides of the opening and hold hinges, strike plates and weatherstripping. Together with the [sill](https://honeyrock.multisites.ai/glossary/sill) and head, they make the frame that the [sash](https://honeyrock.multisites.ai/glossary/sash) or door panel sits in.

Jamb depth must match the wall thickness. If a frame is too shallow, trim and finishing get awkward. Always confirm jamb depth with the maker before you order. Many projects also depend on the [rough opening](https://honeyrock.multisites.ai/glossary/rough-opening) being the right size for the frame.
