# Awning window

An awning window is hinged at the top and opens outward from the bottom, like a shade over the glass.

The sash swings out from the sill edge and the top stays fixed. The open sash acts as a small canopy. You can leave it open for fresh air during light rain.

Awning windows are usually wider than tall. They work well high on a wall for privacy, or stacked below a [fixed window](https://honeyrock.multisites.ai/glossary/fixed-window) to add ventilation under a large view. They share hardware ideas with the [casement window](https://honeyrock.multisites.ai/glossary/casement-window). See our [casement and awning windows](https://honeyrock.multisites.ai/windows/casement-and-awning-windows) page. Ask whether the sash opens wide enough for cleaning from inside. Ask about screen options.
